Bio: Pam, a Retention Specialist at Howard Community College, is passionate about sustainability and infuses the subject matter into the courses that she teaches as an Adjunct Faculty member of the College.
Going beyond the standard textbooks, Pam has integrated sustainability themes into her developmental English course, "Fundamentals of Reading." Throughout the semester, students read books and articles about sophisticated topics related to sustainability, environmental conservation, storm water management, integrated pest management, and green building practices. Students in her class engage in service learning experiences focused on sustainable agriculture to tie the semester's academic content directly to real-life experiences. As a result of her efforts, students not only meet their learning objectives but also become environmentally literate and civically engaged environmental advocates.
Pam also developed and taught an Environmental Health course at the College. Under her instruction, the students in the environmental health class engaged in a service learning project to educate the community about toxicity levels found in everyday products and present "greener" alternatives.
